Benefits of Security Door Secondary Locks

Secondary locks are usually fitted close to the handle of security doors and give additional protection. Secondary locks often have a thumb turn on the interior side for easy locking and unlocking of security doors: no key is required. When you need to lock the door from the inside, thumb turn is rotated 90 degrees. It is advisable that the two locks (primary lock and secondary lock) would have different construction, as this can enhance the overall security of the door.

Secondary locks are cheaper and less complex than primary locks; typically they have a lower security class. But secondary locks are as important for the home security and give additional protection. Below are some recommendations for choosing a secondary lock for security doors.
Country of production. Manufacturer of the lock is important; it is advisable to use locks produced by well-known European manufacturers who carry out rigorous tests and prove the security of their locks. Avoid cheap locks made in China or other countries, as they are less sturdy and often carry no certificates.
Lock type. Security doors often have two different locks, so that to discourage any break-in attempts. Locks can be either lever locks or cylinder locks; each type has its benefits and drawbacks. Mortise locks are expensive but highly secure. The locking mechanism and deadbolts are enclosed in a metal box, which is installed into the security door. Fitting a mortise lock requires a skilled locksmith, as the lock is placed in a deep cavity, or mortise made in the door. Mortise locks used to be a feature of rich homes, but due to the increased need for security, they have become common in ordinary homes as well. Mortise locks can have either a lever mechanism or a cylinder mechanism at its core. Usually replacement of such lock is expensive, as the whole box has to be bought and installed.
Cylinder locks. Cylinder locks are less expensive and easier to install. After their invention, cylinder locks became very popular and outrivaled mortise locks in many applications. Cylinder locks need only two holes to be drilled into the door. Cylinder locks can be either single cylinder or double cylinder. A single cylinder lock is operated by a key from the outside and with a thumb turn from the inside. This means that while inside, you will need no key to lock or unlock the security door, enhancing your safety in case of an emergency. However, single cylinder locks are not recommended for security doors with glass panels; a burglar may attempt to break the glass and unlock the door from the inside using the thumb turn. In such cases, double cylinder locks are better. A double cylinder lock is operated by a key from both sides and is more secure. It should be noted that double cylinder locks are forbidden in some areas due to fire safety regulations. If this is the case in your area, and you need to have a thumb turn from the inside, think of some other security increasing measures, e.g. laminated glass or a secondary lock that cannot be reached from the vision panel.
Lock security class. Locks for security doors should be certified, indicating a security class that the lock represents. European lock manufacturers usually follow the standards established by Sweden or the EU. Cylinder locks are classified as Grade 1 to 5, with 5 being the most secure. Lever locks are classified as Grade 1 to 7, with 7 being the most secure. High security class of the lock shows that the lock is made of high quality materials and can resist a skilled burglar.
Burglar-proof features. Before buying a new lock, inquire about its security features. Many modern locks have anti-drill plates and are resistant to bumping, prying, hammering, and other lock picking techniques.
Key duplication. Some cylinder locks have key control, which means that keys can only be duplicated by the manufacturer of the lock. This increases home security as strangers cannot simply make copies of the keys at a locksmith. Some lock manufacturers have introduced interactive card, which gives even more protection. Interactive card is issued together with the set of keys, and proves the identity of the buyer. Keys can be duplicated only when this card is provided, and this can be done in approved locations only. This way the keys are protected from illegal copying. Security doors should have at least one lock with key control.
Locking points. Simple locks are usually locked in one point only, that is, the door is secured into the frame by one metal deadbolt or latchbolt. But high security locks that are intended for security doors often have 3, 6, or 7 locking points. Multiple locking points prevent cutting of the bolts and keep the door firmly against the frame.
Number of turns. This is how many times you need to turn the key in the lock to fully secure it. The most popular are locks with one, two, or four turns. If a lock is characterized as ‘one turn’, the door will be locked by turning the key 360 or 95 degrees, depending on the lock. One turn locks are convenient and easy to use, they take less time to unlock, so they are typically fitted close to the security door handle and are intended for frequent use. Locks with four turns, on the other hand, are more secure and have additional safety features.
Special keys. Some locks have one or more special keys included in the set. Special keys are intended for personnel use, e.g. when a babysitter or a construction worker needs access to the house. Special keys can be of several types.
1. Service key can unlock the latchbolt only; it can be used to enter the house if not locked otherwise.
2. Y-type key is able to unlock the latchbolt and two turns of the lock. This means that if a lock has four turns in total, the residents can choose to lock in two turns (so that a service person would be able to enter using a Y-type key), or they can lock in three or four turns (then the Y-type key will not work).
3. Construction key is used during the building period only; same as Y-type key, it can unlock the latchbolt and two turns of a lock. However, after the building works are finished, the lock is reconfigured (by inserting a regular key) so that construction key no longer fits.
4. Master key is also used during construction works; it can open several different locks on the building site. After the works are finished, respective keys are used for each lock and the master key no longer works.
Size and shape of keys. Security door keys can be broadly classified into two categories: levered keys and cylinder keys. Levered keys are bigger and heavier than cylinder keys. If security doors will be used by elderly people or small children, consider reversible keys; reversible keys can be inserted into the cylinder upside down and still work.
Lock replacement. Usually the same lock is used for many years, but it is advisable to explore the lock replacement possibilities in case it needs early replacement, e.g. having lost a key. Mortise type lever locks are difficult and expensive to replace, as they usually require the whole box to be taken out. Cylinder locks are much easier to replace, because only a new cylinder is necessary. Some modern locks have a possibility of rekeying instead of changing the whole lock. The set of keys includes a special key that can change the configuration of the lock. By doing this, the old keys no longer fit the lock, and a new set of keys is used.
