uPVC Door Installation Notes

1.   Before starting the installation of uPVC doors, the aperture has to be cleaned from any dust or debris; the area around the aperture has to be free of furniture and sensitive electronic devices.
2.   If the floor is not yet finished, it is necessary to calculate the height that it will have when finished. New uPVC doors should be installed having in mind the finished floor height.
3.   uPVC door frame is placed in the aperture using wedge packers, so that the frame would stand plumb and square.
4.   Usually uPVC doors are fixed using bolts and screws that are at least 100 mm long. Holes are drilled through the uPVC door frame into the aperture.
5.   Fixing points for uPVC doors are the same as those for uPVC windows.

Installation method and fittings (whether to use fittings made in Germany or in other countries).
Door sealant used (expanding foam, water resistant foil tape, etc.).

uPVC door installation is cheaper if no sealing tapes are selected; you can choose this option if it meets your requirements. In other cases, the price of uPVC door installation is higher and depends on the quality and features of the door sealing tape used. uPVC door installation price is moderately affected by the chosen uPVC door installation method, but there is no significant price difference between installation using screws and cleats.

There are two basic methods used when installing uPVC doors: direct and indirect. uPVC doors can be installed by using either, but one method may be better over the other in some situations. Drilling through the frame (direct method). A certain number of holes are drilled into the uPVC frame; these are later secured using appropriate screws. All the heads of the screws can be covered with caps so that they would be less visible. Fixing using screws is possible only when uPVC door is to be fixed inside the door opening (not protruding to the outside).
Fixing using cleats or straps (indirect method). At first, the cleats are fixed onto the uPVC door frame in specified locations. Then the frame is fixed to the door opening using screws. uPVC door installation using cleats is better in that uPVC door chambers inside the frame are not damaged in the process. Installation with cleats is suitable when uPVC door is installed outside of the door opening, but it also works well when installing the uPVC door inside the opening. Hide

1.   Check the size of your new uPVC door, whether it matches your order. If you are replacing an existing door, compare the old door and the new one in order to see if they are exactly of the same size.
2.   Prepare the room for door installation: remove any door decorations and make space around the door opening. Cover the floor and furniture with protective cloth so that not to damage them. Any electrical appliances should also be covered.
3.   Remove the old door. Be careful when removing old doors so that damage to the aperture would be kept to minimum. Old masonry buildings are more sensitive so it requires expertise to remove the existing doors without causing damage. It is recommended to rely on professionals in such cases. Old doors are then collected for recycling.
4.   Prepare the aperture. Door opening should be cleaned from debris and dust. If the weather is dry, it is advised to moisten the surface. This way polyurethane foam will stick better.
5.   Remove the sash of the uPVC door (the part that can be opened).
6.   Place the frame into the opening (aperture). There have to be small gaps for insulation around the uPVC door perimeter. Door packers made of wood or plastic are used to set and secure the frame in place. Check whether the uPVC door frame is set correctly by using a spirit level or another device to measure verticality and horizontality of the uPVC frame. Also determine whether the frame is a square by measuring the corners or comparing diagonal lengths. If there are any inaccuracies, use door wedges to further adjust the frame position.
7.   Secure the uPVC door frame into the aperture. There are two basic methods to do this, either by using screws or cleats (straps). Follow the advice on fixing locations below.
8.   Put the sash back on uPVC door hinges, fix the handle.
9.   Adjust the uPVC door hardware. Check whether the uPVC door can be opened and closed smoothly and whether the locks operate correctly. If necessary, make adjustments. Note: you may have to re-adjust the hardware again after several days or weeks after installation, because it takes time for the sash to settle.
10.   Seal the perimeter of the uPVC door by using polyurethane foam or another door sealant.
11.   Cover the foam by water-resistant door sealing tape (if required).
12.   Fit door trimming to finish the project (if required).
13.   Remove protective tape from uPVC profiles. Protective tape should be removed in the very end, when all construction works are finished. However, it is important to remove it without delay, because ageing makes the tape extremely difficult to remove. There is a three-month guarantee that protective tape can be removed.
One uPVC door takes around 30 minutes to install, provided that it is done by a professional. It is important to note that uPVC doors can be installed both in summer and in winter. Polyurethane foam that is used nowadays can be used when the outside temperature is up to -10 degrees C. However, from our experience we can tell that the temperature outside should be not lower than -5 degrees C. Hide

uPVC Door Fixing Points

uPVC door fixing points should be determined in advance. Here are some recommendations:

Each corner should be secured by adding fixing points 150-250 mm from the sides but not less.
Other fixing points should be distributed every 700 mm or less.
Each jamb should have at least two fixing points.

As a result, uPVC doors might lose weather-tightness and wear quicker. In order to extend the life of uPVC doors, it is recommended to cover expanding foam with door sealing tape which gives additional protection. The main advice is to seal the interior surface of uPVC doors tighter than the exterior surface. Door sealing tapes are classified according to the place of application, whether interior or exterior.
Interior door sealing tapes resist water and air: vapour that appears inside the room is prevented from entering the uPVC door joint.
Exterior door sealing tapes resist water but are permeable to vapour diffusion, so any vapour appearing inside the joint is free to diffuse into the outside.
