Wooden Door Profile Prices

Wooden door profiles come in several types, and each of them has a slightly different price. Economy budget profile is the cheapest option for wooden doors. Thick wooden door profiles that are suitable for the passive house are more expensive. Outward opening wooden door profiles have the highest price (these can be used for tilt and turn patio doors and wooden French doors).

Wooden Door Profile Types

Wooden door profile refers to the frame and leaf of wooden doors - in other words, it is the wooden part of the door. In contrast to PVC profiles which are hollow, wooden profiles are solid; wood is already a good thermal insulator, so there is no need for air cavities. Wooden door profiles are classified according to their depth, shape, materials used, and the country of origin, among other factors. Four types of wooden door profiles can be distinguished.
Narrow wooden profiles. Wooden profiles can be narrow (Economy budget profile) or wide (Passive house profile). Generally it can be stated that the wider the wooden profile, the better heat and sound insulation is achieved. Narrow wooden profiles are usually made of glued laminated wood that involves three layers. Narrow profiles are 68 mm depth; they are moderately priced and have fairly good heat and sound insulation properties. Double glazing is the usual glass option, but with certain size restrictions. Wooden doors made of narrow profile are suitable for various interior and exterior applications in apartment buildings, private houses, office buildings, etc.
Wide wooden profiles are better at insulating heat and sound. They are usually made of glued laminated wood that involves three layers. The usual profile depth in this category is 78 mm. Wide wooden profile allows selecting a better glazing (double glazing or triple glazing) for superior heat and sound insulation. Wide wooden profiles have a higher price, but this pays back in time: you save money on heating bills. Wooden doors made of wide profile are recommended for private houses—they make perfect front doors. These wooden doors are also suitable for passive house projects.
Outward opening wooden profiles are usually used in tilt and turn wooden doors and wooden French doors. While the standard doors of these two types open inwards, this profile is designed to open outwards; this proves very beneficial in areas of strong winds and rain, as the wind presses the sash firmly against the frame thus improving the weather tightness of the wooden door. Another advantage of outward opening wooden door profile is saving space: these wooden doors open outwards, so you can use the space of the room and put furniture close to the wooden doors.
Aluminium clad wooden profiles. Wooden doors can be made maintenance-free by covering their exterior by a cladding made of aluminium. There are two ways of producing aluminium cladding: roll-forming and extrusion. Roll formed aluminium cladding is usually quite thin, so it can be easily shaped and bent, while extruded aluminium cladding is thicker and does not bend easily. Extruded aluminium cladding is more expensive, but it is regarded as a better, more durable option for wooden doors. Aluminium cladding wraps the whole exterior of wooden doors, apart from glazing: cladding covers the frame and leaf of wooden doors. Advantages of aluminium cladding include water resistance, UV resistance, durability and toughness. What is more, aluminium surface is easy to clean and requires minimal maintenance. Besides, being a lightweight material, aluminium adds no substantial weight to the wooden door construction. Aluminium cladding covers only the exterior of wooden doors, so the natural warmth of wood can be still enjoyed from the interior. Aluminium cladding can be fitted on wooden doors during the door production, or it can be retrofitted on a wooden door that is already installed, e.g. during house renovation. There are several colours that can be selected for the cladding. Aluminium clad wooden doors have a solid and rich appearance and are suitable for residential buildings, office buildings, commercial buildings, etc. The main drawback of aluminium clad wooden doors is their high price. Wooden Door Profile Materials

Wooden door profiles are made of natural wood. Several factors should be considered when choosing materials for your new wooden doors, namely wood species (whether a softwood or hardwood), wood quality (whether clear or knotty), and the production technique (solid wood or engineered wood).

Wood Species

Wooden doors can be made of various wood species, including pine, fir, mahogany, oak, ash, and many others. All of them can be classified as either hardwood or softwood. Softwood is produced from trees that are evergreen and have leaves that look like needles, such as pine and fir, among others. Softwoods are more vulnerable to weather conditions than hardwoods; they are not as durable. Therefore, softwoods are more often used in the interior, e.g. interior wooden doors. However, softwoods are cheaper and grow fast, which makes them attractive to wooden door manufacturers. New technologies are introduced to make softwood more resistant and suitable for doors: softwood is often treated before use. It is important to note that softwood has a better thermal insulation compared to hardwood.
Hardwood is produced from such trees that have large leaves which fall in the autumn. Examples include oak, ash, beech, mahogany, and many others. Hardwoods are strong and durable and they have a better weather resistance compared to softwood. For this reason, hardwoods are preferred in exterior applications, such as wooden front doors and patio doors. Hardwoods are typically more expensive and are regarded as more beautiful. In some cases, hardwood veneer is used to cover softwood so that to give it the appearance of a more expensive wood species. When used for wooden doors, knotty wood is carefully treated to remove all imperfections. Clear wood is already without any blemishes or imperfections and has a more solid appearance. For exterior applications, where stability and weather resistance is required, consider engineered wood. A specific kind of engineered wood used for wooden doors is called glued laminated wood or glulam. It involves several thick layers of clear wood glued together in such a way that their grain patterns would alternate. This way a stable and durable material is produced. Benefits of engineered wood are numerous:
- Engineered wood is tough and durable.
- It has a higher resistance to shrinking and expanding than solid wood.
- All knots and blemishes are removed, so engineered wood has a more attractive appearance.
- Engineered wood can be painted and varnished right away, as opposed to solid wood which requires some time for settling.
- There is less timber waste in producing engineered wood.
- There are almost no restrictions on the size (width and length) of engineered wood products.

Aluminium drainage strips

Wooden door profiles are often weather-proofed by fixing aluminium drainage strips. Long and narrow strips of aluminium are usually fixed along the bottom rail of wooden doors (both frame and leaf) to prevent accumulation of water. Aluminium drainage strips are bevelled which allows for easy drainage of water. Aluminium drainage strips are commonly used for both inward opening and outward opening wooden doors. Drainage strips are made with plastic caps which cover the sharp edges of aluminium strips. Aluminium drainage strips come in several colours, with aluminium, white and brown as standard.

Wooden Door Profile Seals

Wooden door profiles include seals or gaskets which weather-proof all possible gaps around the wooden door perimeter. A seal is a narrow rubber band that is fixed all around the wooden door, primarily between frame and leaf. Wooden door seal is compressed by closing the wooden door. As there are no remaining gaps around the perimeter, no cold, rain or wind can enter the room. Usually there are two or three perimeters of door seal, depending on the type of wooden doors:

Two perimeters of door seal is a standard option for residential buildings.
Three perimeters of door seal are used in special cases when the best heat and sound insulation is required, e.g. for the passive house.

Wooden doors look better when door seals are invisible from the outside. Therefore many wooden doors feature low level gasket lines which are almost unnoticeable when the wooden door is closed. Wooden door gaskets need maintenance once a year; it is advisable to clean the gaskets and apply some silicone solution so that the rubber would retain its sealing properties. Wooden door gaskets come in different colours which can be fitted to the colour of your wooden doors.

Wooden Door Profile Colours

Wooden door profiles can be painted, stained or varnished in various colours. There is a choice among standard colours and non-standard colours, as well as an option to highlight the natural grain pattern of wood. Wooden profiles can be coloured from both sides; there is a possibility to choose different colours for each side.

Wooden Door Profile Guarantee

Wooden door profiles usually come with a 5 year guarantee, depending on the type. The guarantee is outlined in the agreement to be signed prior to the manufacturing process. The guarantee ensures that the wooden profile will not crack as a result of poor production or its weight (provided that relative humidity in the room does not exceed 60 %).
